Meet Nancy Pelosi, Protector of the Oligarchy
By hoodwinking Democrats while funding America's war machine, Pelosi is just as much of a threat as the Republicans she pretends to oppose.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not pursue a leadership post in the next Congress after Republicans take control.”
Nancy Pelosi is a master of performative opposition and political theatrics, distracting and hoodwinking Democratic voters while funding America’s war machine and protecting the two-party monopoly.
Pelosi is revered by her fans and has an unmatched press operation that churns out regular puff pieces painting her as a champion of “democracy” and a thorn in the GOP’s side. Nothing could be further from the truth. With Pelosi at the helm of the House, Republicans (and Democrats) have gotten away with murder, literally. She stubbornly refused to impeach George W. Bush for war crimes, and gave Trump “everything he wanted,” in the words of Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna:
The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed a $738 billion defense bill that funds the US-Mexico border wall, the Space Force, and continued US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, handing President Donald Trump a big win as Democrats are simultaneously on the brink of impeaching him.
"The NDAA is a capitulation to the White House's priorities, as is evidenced by the president's tweet...He basically said that he got everything he wanted, from border security and a bloated defense budget to a blank check on policy in the Middle East," Khanna said via a phone call Thursday morning.
Not only has Pelosi presided over major military budget increases, but she made sure to give Trump expanded surveillance powers: “By tucking the measure into a must-pass bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi forced many members who oppose the Patriot Act to vote in favor of its extension.”
She called the Green New Deal “the green dream or whatever," but used the climate emergency to defend increasing the military budget:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday defended the recent bipartisan decision to top up the defense budget, hitting back at criticism that the U.S. military emits more carbon than the country of Portugal. Speaking at the COP26 in Glasgow, Pelosi noted, “National security advisors all tell us that the climate crisis is a national security matter.”
To lull Democratic voters, Pelosi engages in cynical and meaningless theatrics, clapping sideways, wearing shades, tearing speeches, and donning Kente cloth. These empty gestures are cheered by her adoring supporters.
Like Mitch McConnell and other contemptible Republicans who manipulate the inner workings of Congress to advance the oligarchy’s agenda, Pelosi uses her power to enrich herself and her corporate donors. She and her husband have amassed a fortune of tens of millions of dollars; she is credibly accused of insider trading, and currently stands in the way of a bill to curb stock trading by members of Congress.
Pelosi has repeatedly called for a stronger Republican Party, but is quick to punch left, crushing any external or internal threats to the system.
While labeling Trump an “imminent threat” to the Constitution, she funded his most egregious abuses, including the torture of migrant families at the border.
The GOP is the party of white supremacy and fascism, but it cannot fully exert power without the illusion of opposition created by Democratic leaders like Pelosi. That dance of the duopoly keeps the oppressive system running, which makes Pelosi just as much of a threat as the Republicans she pretends to oppose.
